Evaluation of Unit 11

During this unit I have been able to research and have a look into education and employment, something that is a big part of my life especially as I am considering going to University next year. I have been able to research into a number of different universities, ones I’ve even decided to visit and maybe think about becoming a student there come next year. This research has helped me realise I definitely want to attend University to study Media and Communications. This is a broad course which covers every aspect of media, it’s a good course for people who want to do do media but aren’t exactly sure what they want to do in this subject. It covers all sectors and I’d love to have a go at everything because I may even like a certain sector but never considered taking it as an individual subject because I didn’t think i’d like it.

As part of the research I first of all researched the difference between a job and career, this allowed me to see what each of them can offer me and what I would benefit out of the most.  I have then completed four mind maps which looks into two educational pathways and two job pathways that I could possibly take after studying the photography course. I decided to look into a Media degree, which of course at this point is more convenient for me as that is what I’m actually going to be doing, a fashion degree, Wedding photography and Journalism. It made me realise how many different pathways ways I could take just by doing a photography course at college. I have also completed a variety of different case studies, This starts of with identifying specifics so that I could evaluate my strength and weaknesses of myself as a person, this was about me and what I can give to the industry, the second case study was about when I did my work experience and what it has taught me along with strengths and weaknesses and how that helped me along the way. I was also able to analyse the opportunities and barriers that went along with that too. I have also competed my personal statement, this is important as I need it for when I apply for University. I was able to use the UCAs templates to help write down some notes about me that cover all areas and they string it together in sentences and paragraphs.

I found this unit quite useful as it gave me time to write my personal statement as I hardly have any time out of college to write it due to having a job. I found it quite easy to write my personal statement once I had written a few notes down, after that it was all about putting it together in sentences. I knew I wanted to go to University which made personal statement writing a little easier as I had something to aim for. This Unit has fallen into place with applying for universities at the right time as I am in the middle of looking around different places to see if I like it there and to see what the course can offer me at these locations. I was able to research into different job and careers that I could take after doing this photography course, it enabled me to make a decision of what I want to do at University, I chose Media and Communications. As a part of the research I was able to work out the financial cost that everything would be when given different job scenarios, I had to work out everything I would be paying for, then take it away from the amount of money i’d be earning that year. I was then able to work out how much money i’d have left over to take care after myself. This task made everything surreal and showed us how much money we would need to make our adulthood life seem ok. A Job to earn money is vital especially when having to pay off rent and and contracts such as wifi and any household everyday essentials.

The only thing I struggled with when it came to this unit was working out the financial costs of things and how to take it off annually, after it was explained to me multiple times I got the hang of it and was able to complete it along with the rest of the course. This unit is small and quick to complete yet helps the most with the university situation.

This unit has helped me research the different aspects i soon live to see after finishing my photography course at college. I have finished my UCAs application and now I will continue to go to different university open days to see what is best for me. Knowing the information that I have researched during this course has made it a lot easier for me to understand.

Open Day Evaluation

On Thursday the 3rd of November, Harlow College held the first opening evening out of three for the upcoming students who will hope to attend college next year. Within our department we had set up in the large main studio, small side studio, darkroom and J127 classroom.

I based myself in the large studio however had visited each of the setups at one point in the night. In the main studio we had two photography set ups, As you walk in the first camera setup you saw was for portraits, where I had posed for a couple shots whilst Katy or Jess took the photo to help demonstrate to the visitors what a shoot consisted of. There was a chair placed in front of a black background where the model would be sat. To light up this shot we had a soft box to make the lighting soft and have no harsh edges. This was attached to the hot shoot to the camera which triggered the flash. Around the other side of the curtain was the still life shoot setup, Melissa had taken control on this shoot and allowed any of the visitors to have the chance of taking their own photo of the fruit on the DSLR camera. She then continued to explain the course and answer any questions that the parents wanted to know. The fruit was placed on a board on the white table to be shot in front of a white background. To light this shot we used two soft boxes either side of the table to make the shots soft and we also had a hard light to light the background to make it pure white in the final shot. The visitors were able to see this for themselves when taking that photo.

The things that went well for me during this night was I was able to engage with the future students and parents and show them what sort of thing us photography students get up to in shoots with do in college. Along with everyone else I was able to demonstrate what we do in the shoot and answer any questions the visitors had that would help them decide whether or not this course was for them. The negatives that occurred in the night were thing like the portrait shoot setup, it was abandoned due to students getting fed up or bored. I think that the set up should be different for the next open day so that not only the visitors are engaged but the photography student that attend college are too. The studio became overcrowded and i know for sure that other photography locations weren’t as busy and could take up some other students, for example the darkroom had no one in it at all.  For the next open evening we could maybe try and have a practical going on in the darkroom.

Overall, I think the open evening was successful as everyone did what they were assigned to and made sure they gave a great variety of answers when asked questions by the parents. The parents and students were able to experience a College photo shoot and understand what goes on in college and what the course will bring to their child’s life.

Case Study

My First Day-

For my first day at work experience at Passmores Academy I had to help out with the photography and graphics classes along side Miss Richards. In between classes that she didn’t have to teach I helped her sort out folders that needed arranging and neatening.

Mistakes Made-

I feel within the 30 hours spent doing work experience that I could have been more outgoing and able to approach the students myself and ask how they are getting on with the tasks set.

Successes Achieved-

I was able to teach the class different techniques within Photoshop that they would use in their project that they were working on. They grasped the concept quickly as I explained what to do, making the task easier to achieve. They then thought it was easy to approach me to ask any other questions that they had, this made them feel comfortable.

Lessons Learnt-

This work experience has made me realise that I do not want to work in a school. If anything it would be my last resort.

Identifying Specifics

Strengths-

  • I am good at working on my own as well as in a team.
  • I am well organised.
  • I set reasonable tasks for me to complete, making the flow of work easier to address.

Weakness-

  • I need to work on becoming more confident, especially when it comes to talking to the public.
  • I feel I need to become more wary with different technology softwares and equipment.

Opportunities-

  • I can be put with another colleague and be able to get on with the work provided without any hassle.
  •  As I am organised, I can prepare my work in the order it needs completing so that it is given in on time.

Barriers-

  • As I have never had a job i’ve had no experience with working with the public, therefore I cannot improve on my confidence in this specific area.
  • To become wary of different technology i can research and practice using various different softwares and equipment.
